REVIEW
Gangs of
New York
"Amazing Scale, Extremly Detailed Sets, Superb!"
Yes it did take a long time to get up to writing this review but here it is. The movie opens with the preperation of a big fight between the Irish group people and the Native New Yorkers. The battle starts as the Irish go outside and soon the Natives come. The leader of Irish, Liam Neeson, and the Natives, Danial Day-Lewis have a discussion and prepare to fight. The battle soon starts in a large scale battle with knives, clubs, cleavers, and extremely sharp fingernails. The battle starts off with just Daniel Day Lewis hitting people with his cleavers. Then it goes to some gorier shots. Its an excitng battle with great choreography and scale.
A few years later, Leonardo DiCaprio returns to New York after leaving. He was about 5 during the battle. He meets up with an old friend and they hang out. As it turns out Bill the Butcher, Daniel Day Lewis' character, really is a butcher. You learn more about him and he isn't that bad. Leo then befriends Bill and becomes a trusted friend for a while.
Cameron Diaz's character is a theif and Leo catches her and knows she's sneeky. They become friends after awhile. There are also fights between rivallry firefighters. When a house is burning down, 2 fire departments arrive at the same time and then fight over who puts out the house.
It then gets to a mayoral race, but there is strong cheating and requires some soliders to clean it up. Alot of other stuff happens. The last 20 minutes are filled with violence as the New York is hit by cannonballs, looting, and infantry the crowds.
This was an entertaining movie. Very large scale, beautiful sets, choreography, mood. The acting is mostly good. Cameron Diaz isn't a great actress here. This movie is has alot content warnings, but is very nicely done. It is very graphicly violent among other things ;?) (20 minutes)    I enjoyed this very much. Is a great movie, yes. Is it better than A Beautiful Mind? No, but this isn't the same kind of movie.
