REVIEW
The Pianist
"Excellent!"
This movie opens with the scene most people think is funny when they hear about the movie. The guy is laying the piano for a radio station and then he keeps playing when bombs start going off. When you think of his motivation and the reason he’s playing the piano to begin with the radio is to keep people calm. The music keeps people calm when the bombs are going down. Anyway, that’s about a 3 minute scene. You then meet his large family. They are a Jewish family living in Poland. You stay with them for a few months (or years. I forgot) They read the newspaper following the stories. The invasion of France, all Jews must wear the star, and others. You then follow them through their lives. The Pianist doesn’t bow his head or other type of showing of inferiority to a cop a nazi guy and he beats him. Other scenes show the nazi making people dance for no reason and tossing an old guy in a wheel chair off a balcony. Later, all the Jews in the area must move to the Ghetto. You see what its like in its crowds and famine and insanitariness. After a few months, the entire ghetto is sent off to labor camps. The Pianist is saved by a friend who is part of the Jewish police. He begins working to repair buildings and take down a brick wall. After getting freed he moves around in safe houses. There is a lot of bread in this movie. The nazi’s later destroy the area and he moves around some houses even with the city mostly vacated. He searches for food and safety from the nazi’s. He later meets runs into a German Officer. The officer has him play the piano and helps him. This is not all that happens.
This is a very fine movie. The acting is very casual and seems very believable throughout by the whole cast. The sets are great looking with nice detail. The special effects are very good when cannon blow walls down. Gives a good feel of how it was like back then. Was Adrian Brody better than Daniel Day-Lewis? Well Daniel Day-Lewis put so much effort into his character creating it and using that thick accent, while Adrian Brody seems so comfortable in the character. He shows fear and other emotions. What is considered for best actor? Acting comfortable or creating the character? I don’t.  This is not too gory, but has some moments of intensity.  This is a movie that is very worth seeing. It gives a perspective on a part of history you’ve probably haven’t seen before and is entertaining.
