Material: turkey baster
a tall glass ( about 6 in high, 2.5 in wide)
a smaller glass
a can of Mountain Dew or equivalent in color
strawberry Cool Aid or powder equivalent in color
Experiment:
Fill a third of the tall glass with Mountain Dew . Prepare in the small
glass a concentrated
solution of Cool Aid by dissolving two large tablespoons of powder in water- Do not use the sugar free powder ! Stir.
Remove the rubber top of the turkey baster and use the wide plastic pipette
as a funnel.
Dip this funnel in the Mountain Dew( large glass) in such a way that the
tip of the funnel
touches the bottom of the glass.
Pour very, very slowly some of the Cool Aid in the pipette/funnel and observe
it push the
Mountain Dew up in the glass. Very, very
slowly remove the pipette and you can enjoy that special drink, sample
each
layer with a straw...and fill in the report.
PLEASE PRINT THIS REPORT AND COMPLETE. Name: _____________________
Calculations: use the following conversions
: 1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 cm 3 = 1 ml
1 oz = 28.349 g
1 liter = 0.264 gallon
1 mole of sugar = 342 g
1. calculate the volume of the glass in in 3 , cm 3 and ml ( use the glass above)
ans: _______ in 3
ans:________cm3
ans:________ml
2. compare the density of the Cool Aid to the density of the Mountain Dew:
Higher/Lower?
Explain.
3. determine the density of the Mountain Dew knowing that 355ml weighs
380 g.
Express your answer in g/ml and oz/gallon.
ans: ___________ g/ml
ans: ___________oz / gallon
4. compare the density of Moutain Dew to the density of water; Higher/
Lower?
Explain.
5. In a can of Mountain Dew there is 46 g of sugar ( sucrose) :calculate
the number of mole.
ans: __________mol
