Homework in 3rd Grade
Third graders are given homework to help them develop responsibility. They are responsible to bring home the assignment, complete it with or without a parent's guidance, and then return it. These skills will help prepare third graders for when they reach those high grades where there will be more homework and higher demands on them!!

What Are the Homework Expectations?
Please encourage your child to do his/her best work.

(1.)Homework should be copied off the board into your agenda so you are sure to get the correct assignment.
If you do not do the correct assignment you will do it during recess!
(2.)Homework should be neat and in printing (until we have learned cursive and I have given the approval to do homework in cursive).
Failure to do this will result in redoing your homework neatly during recess!
(3.)Homework should ALWAYS be done in pencil. Homework will not be accepted if written in pen, crayon, marker, etc.
Failure to do this will result in redoing your homework in pencil during recess!
(4.)When completing work on notebook paper (loose-leaf) the heading should include name, date, subject, and the name of the assignment.

Heading example:

Sally Smith 5/15/06
Spelling ABC Order

What Supplies Do I Need At Home To Do Homework?
*Please be sure you have these supplies at home to do your homework. Students will NOT be allowed to take home their school supplies so it is IMPORTANT for them to have these supplies at home.

Loose-leaf paper (this should be kept in your SMILE Notebook)
Pencils and Erasers
Crayons and/or markers
Scissors
Glue

When Will We Get Homework?
Third grade students will usually have some type of homework every night. Students who receive a passing score (70% or higher) on their spelling test will have no homework on Fridays. Students who receive less than 70% on their Friday spelling test will need to use each word they missed in a sentence and make sure they spell it right! They will also need to get their test signed by a parent. Otherwise there is no other homework given on Fridays!

How Long Should Homework Take To Do?
Homework will usually not take any longer than 30 minutes for third graders to complete. (This does not include the 15 minutes of reading students should be doing every night.) This also does not include any work your child has brought home because he/she did not have time to finish it in class.

Can Parents Help With Homework?
Yes, parents can help with homework but parents should not DO the homework! Please, please, please, DO NOT write your child's work for them. You are not helping your child by doing this. Homework assignments should be able to be completed by students independently but even independent work needs parental involvement. Always check over your child's work and initial and date it so I am aware you looked it over. Should you correct the mistakes your child has made? Yes, you can point out the mistakes to your child and help your child understand what he or she did incorrectly. If you notice your child is having trouble in a certain area, feel free to jot a quick note right on the assignment.

Homework is usually not graded since hopefully you have already looked over your child's work at home. I do look it over to be sure the student understands it. If your child has an unusually difficult time doing the assignment please make a note on it letting me know so that I can work with him or her individually on the skill. Failure to complete homework on a regular basis will affect a student's grade on his or her report card.
