Discovery Club was formed for the children. The ultimate goal is to help the children establish new comprehension strategies while giving the student a new love for reading. The Club really opens lines of communications based upon what they read. Students have the chance of listening to what their fellow classmates learned from reading, as well as sharing what they learned.
The children meet on a regular, predictable scheduale to discuss their reading. The students use written or drawn notes to guide their reading and discussing. The discussion topics come from the students. Group meetings aim to be open, natural conversations about books, so personal connections, disgressions, and open-ended questions are welcome. I, the teacher, serve as the facilitator, not a group member or instructor. Evaluation is by the teacher observation and student self-evaluation. A spirit of playfulness and fun pervades the room. Upon completion students remain in groups and complete Book Review. |
