THE PHRASE           EXERCISES

 

EXERCISE I: COPY AND PASTE THIS EXERCISE ON A WORD DOCUMENT. THEN UNDERLINE THE

            PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES IN EACH SENTENCE BELOW.

 

1. One of the most famous oracle in Greece was the Delphic oracle.

 

2. It was located in Apollo’s temple which was at Delphi, Greece.

 

3. The temple, supposedly the center of the earth, was a religious shrine for all of Greece.

 

4. The temple’s priestess inhaled vapors which rose from a pit, and then she went into a trance.

 

5. During the trance, she delivered messages from Apollo.

 

6. The term Delphian aptly describes a statement that can be interpreted in two different ways because of

            predictions like this one.

 

EXERCISE II: WRITE DOWN ON THE ABOVE WORD DOCUMENT ALL OF THE PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE

            FOUND ABOVE. NUMBER THEM. THEN TELL HOW EACH PHRASE WAS USED (ADJECTIVE OR ADVERB)

            AND THE WORD IT MODIFIES

 

EXAMPLE:  The dog in the house barked during the day.                    

                        1. in the house              adjective phrase                        the dog

                        2.during the day            adverb phrase                           barked
