| Dear Parents, April 4, 2003 Welcome back! I hope everyone had a nice and relaxing spring break. Time seemed to go by so fast. I am ready to come back to school and do what I love so much, which is teaching. This month and next month are going to fly by. There are about 7 weeks left of school and we still have so much to learn. It is important to continue and maintain good work and study habits at home. This is a crucial time for the children. We are looking to see who is ready for second grade. Please read what will be happening this month. God bless, Mrs. Miller Here's what is in store for this month: Math Minutes with Mrs. Miller: This month in Math, we will be starting Ch. 9, which is adding and subtracting two-digit numbers. In Ch. 9, the students will be able to: 1. Estimate the number of objects in a group. 2. Adding and subtracting tens. 3. Adding and subtracting dimes. 4. Adding 1- and 2-digit numbers without regrouping 5. Subtracting 1- and 2-digit numbers without regrouping 6. Estimating sums and differences. 7. Adding 2-digit money amounts without regrouping. 8. Subtracting 2-digit money amounts without regrouping. 9. Adding and subtracting 1- and 2-digit numbers in chain operations (no regrouping) 10. Regrouping 10 ones as 1 ten in addition. 11. Regrouping 1 ten as 10 ones in subtraction. Extra! Extra! Read All About It!: In Language Arts, we will begin Unit 6: Hometowns. The theme of this unit is that we are all members of a community. We will be incorporating phonics and grammar skills within our stories. There is not a word list for this unit. Many of the children did very well on our Unit 5 test. I am very proud of them. They have been working very hard! On the Write Track!: Please make sure that your child is using first or second grade paper for their homework assignments. Please continue to work with your child in writing. Many of them are really improving already. Some of them have very creative imaginations, which make their stories very interesting. Please stress punctuation and capitalization. It is very important for your child to proofread their work and to take their time while they are writing. I will be grading the assignments that were done over the break. Please read any comments that I make to help you point your child in the right direction when they write. Jesus Shows Us His Great Love: We will be starting Unit 4, which is our last unit in religion for this school year. The goals for this unit are: 1. The children will be familiar with the Paschal Mystery and 2. They will be determined to live as loving, active members of the Church. This month we will be focusing on the death and resurrection of Christ. Summer School: Summer school letters went out this past Wednesday for those children who would benefit from the extra help being offered at our school. If your child was recommended for summer school, then you have a choice on whether or not to send them. I think this would be beneficial for all children who were recommended and required to attend. This would help give them a strong foundation and background in preparing them for 2nd grade. If your child will not be attending summer school, then I strongly suggest that they read, write, and review math concepts, which were taught this year in order to maintain their current level, over the summer. |
