"Pain"

"Pain is just an abstract thought", I heard the stranger say.
"An idea in the ether. It's unreal."
(I thought, "No way!")

"Pain is quite intangible", he went on then to mention.
"Pain in fact does not exist."
(This idea caused me tension.)

"Pain is but a state of mind", he mindfully did state.
(His thought-provoking concept was the kind I didn't rate.)

"Pain is never truly there", he almost seemed to preach,
"A theoretical notion, devoid of life",
(Concepts beyond my reach?)

"Pain, in fact, it isn't real!"
(What was this I was hearing?
It went against the instinct I'd confirmed during my rearing.)

As I thought about his lecture, an idea occurred, by golly!
I set to test his conjecture, Was pain subjective folly?

"Pain doesn't exist", I heard him say
and so I went and donged him.
I thought it right to right his wrong,
but he thought I had wronged him.
