Shared Reading:
The Birthday Cake by Joy Cowley
(Thanks to Victoria Smith for the recommendation)

Other Books:

A book for the grownups:
Edward , Unready For School

LITERACY ACTIVITIES:

Predictable Chart: After reading The Kissing Hand we talk about how the children felt coming to school the first day. Then we write the word frame "I was  ____ ."and have each child tell how they felt . The child's word ie: happy, sad, excited, etc. can be written or "smiley"-type faces can be drawn.

Class Book: I send a note home before school starts asking the parents to take a picture of their child doing something to get ready for Kindergarten - buying supplies, getting new shoes, getting a haircut, etc. We use these to make the Kinderlit book "I'm Ready For Kindergarten" based on Miss Bindergarten.

We also make a class book based on The Birthday Cake. Each child draws a cake, any color they like, and finish a word frame that says A ___ cake by ___.  ( This is from the
KinderKorner website.)

Name Activities:
We clap, stamp and snap our names all week.

We write our names in the Name Book ie: Abigail writes her name on the Aa page.

I write the children's names on two sentence strips. One I cut apart so that they can match the letters in the pocket chart.

ABCs: After reading Chicka Chicka Boom Boom we paint a cardboard carpet roll brown. The kids make palm fonts by tracing a pattern onto green construction paper and cutting them out ( good way to observe some fine motor skills.) This year I am thinking of using the green umbrella idea
Denise Fischer has on her site, for attaching the leaves to the tree. We will add the letters to the tree in the random order we learn them.

The children will also make individual trees by tearing paper and adding only the letters they recognize. ( Another great idea from KinderKorner.)

MATH ACTIVITIES

Graphing: We do three graphs the first week. Our weather graph, which goes on throughout the year, is done with unifix cubes. We graph the type of weather and each month record which type of days we had the most of that month. The first day we also graph how we came to school and later in the week we graph how many letters there are in our names.

ASSESSMENT

This year I am using a great tool that I learned about at the iteachk Conference. The gals at Kinderlit have developed a great book for assessment called A Kindergarten Keepsake. You do it with the kiddos in the fall and then again in the spring to show their growth. It then goes home to the parents as a keepsake. I LOVE IT!!!
Angie Bonthuis has a great first day activity on her website that goes along with the Kissing Hand. The children put their handprint on a puzzle form and then take it home with a great poem. Check out her website.
