My third inspiration comes from modern art and the work of two artists; Diane Brawarsky and Shojaei. Ms Brawarsky seems concerned with the abstract principle of "gesture" which is the unique "handwriting" of the artist and with the abstraction of form. These abstractions are based on the principle that by broadening symbols to the universal level you can express timeless truths by invoking a primitive emotional response. I don't want my work to be quite this abstract as I feel the truth is a complex and personal matter and should be expressed as such. Ms Brawarsky also uses elements of collage which I am excited to incorporate into my peice. Collage has a prehistory in folkarts and sacred arts begining in the 12th century. In Japan paper was dyed, ripped, sewed, embossed, and painted so a calligrapher might capture the soul of his poem in the paper. Byzantine Russian icons also make heavy use of the technique and include brocades, embrodired silks, pearls and jems, gold filgiree work and floral arabesque corner peices. Mr Shojaei creates dreamy beautiful figures that I greatly admire. His style is definatly closer to where I want to be in terms of facial abstraction. I want my figures to remain distinct people not "anybody" in fact i'd like even more facial detail but we'll have to see how my drawing skills stand up to it!. NEXT |
