Pattern also plays a part in setting the scene up as modern; the use of rich dress and candle light could easily mislead the viewer. I've considered and may use the idea of facial peircings to imply moderninity but I would also like it to be represented in the pattern. I've consulted with my friends and the problem seems to be that most of the patterns that are instantly recognizable to my generation are associated with marketing campaigns. Some ideas i'm giving further considertion to at this point are grafitii, barcodes, and pixilization (as in Atari).
