M.S.A. kicked off the beginning of the week the right way with the long awaited, long overdue and well worth the wait, Islam Awareness Week.  The scene was set in the atrium with the M.S.A brothers and sisters in full force giving out the packages as promised complete with The Qu’ran and numerous informative brochures and a M.S.A engraved pencil.  The table was placed throughout the LaGuardia campus to maximize the amount of students passing by. With the first day alone there were over 150 packages distributed and the smiles and eagerness on the faces of those interested was well worth the wait.

The story was the same throughout the week with mass amounts students rushing to get there free copies of the Qu’ran.  One thing we did begin to notice was the large numbers of copies we were giving per day.  Alhammdulilah, the table hours hadto be trimmed a bit to make sure that we didn’t run out before the end of the week which was close but we seemed to have just managed with enough.  The average was about 120 package bags per day.  Of course what would be a better way to end each day but to have a film.  We had 20 people viewing the movie, “The Message” the first day.  As the week progressed, there was a decline in movie goers except for those dedicated sisters who one day were the only ones to come and watch the movie.  M.S.A. would like to make an announcement that at no time did we specify a day for only brothers or sisters.

Eventually the week started winding down and so by Thursday we moved the table from it’s scheduled location in the C building back to the Atrium.  By this time we were almost completely dry of Qu’rans and pamphlets.  By Friday, the M.S.A. decided that our point had been made.  LaGuardia now had the word “Islam” all over its campus and we had successfully done our job Allhamdullilah.  The 4 days prior took a lot of dedication and will but we pulled it off

We would like to thank all those who helped and did their part as they promised.  May Allah reward you for your deeds.  Another special thanks to Student life and Development, Student Government,  the M.S.A Executive board and of course everyone who took out of their time to volunteer and spread the word.  This proved to be such a successful event that M.S.A is already in discussions about doing it again.

Our weekly class with Brother Mohammad Yassen came in the middle of Islam Awareness Week and we are pleased to say how happy we were with the size of the crowd as compared to last week.  Brother Yassen spoke on the importance of making Salat and Zakat during the Holy Month of Ramandan.  This of course is a great reminder that we should always give to those in need and who are less fortunateness. And as for Salat, you just have to look around to understand how important making your prayers at their fixed times is.  Time is one of the beautiful things of Ramadan.  Fortunately and unfortunately, there are a lot more brothers and sisters praying now, the only upsetting thing about that is where have you been for the past 11 months?  When Ramadan is gone doesn’t mean you can stop praying at the fixed times or stop praying all together.  As quoted from Brother Yassen, “The most beloved deed is the Salat to Allah.”    Please show your support and  be sure to join us again for the next class.

It looks as if the word caught on fast on where we are holding Iftar and we welcome all of our brothers and sisters.  It is also important that we are together on time to break our fast and make Salat.  Alhamdullila we have been blessed with just enough donations everyday to help us prepare for the following day.  Now that everyone seems to be accustomed to coming, please do your part in helping by giving a hand with setting up the room, staying around to help clean and reorganize the room and of course, any donations given will be accepted.  Thanks to all of you who consistently show your support and make things a little easier, may Allah reward you.
