Pilgrims, Indians, & Turkey by:
Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful.  Today, people celebrate Thanksgiving by having a big dinner with family and friends.  Many years ago (in 1621), the Pilgrims at Plymouth and the Wampanoag Indians observed the first Thanksgiving feast.  The Pilgrims were thankful for the help of the Indians who showed them how to build stronger houses and hunt for food.  One Indian named Squanto, became a very good friend and helped teach the pilgrims to plant corn, squash and beans.  At harvest time, there was plenty of food and on the day of the feast, the Pilgrims covered the tables with food from their gardens.  The Indians brought wild turkeys and shellfish.  It was a time of great celebration and thanksgiving.

RECIPE FOR FRY BREAD
2 cups self-rising flour
1 cup milk
cooking oil

Mix the flour and milk in a large bowl, adding flour as necessary to form a dough.  Flatten small amounts of the dough into patties.  Using a wok or an electric skillet set at 400 degrees Farenheit, brown the bread patties in hot oil.  Drain the cooked bread on a paper towel.  Serve the warm bread with butter, jam, or cinnamon sugar.  Makes approximately 24 small servings of bread.  (Recipe taken from Mailbox, November-A Month of Ideas, 1996 Preschool-Kindergarten, p. 81)
