Objective:

You will be able to describe how the major Indian tribes survived in their climate and environment, what they ate, used for shelter and transportation, and how they traded with other tribes.  You can also research and present additional information on your region and tribes.  You will show what you have learned by creating your own book on one region of your choice, and also work on a group project.

 

 

Book Project

Contents

      Description of the region – climate, resources, land forms (use information from Chapter 1. (pictures and words)

Choose a tribe

      Resources used for building their houses (pictures and words)

      Resources used for food (pictures and words)

      Other information about the tribe – trade, legends, games, etc.

 

We will put the book together in class.  This book will be handwritten and drawn.  You may need to work on your research and writing at home and bring to school to put into your book.

No word-processing or picture pasting.

You can use the internet for your research.

 

 

Group Project:

Your group project will be to create a map of California with pictures and words, using your information from your books that describes the tribes, cultures, and resources of the early California native tribes in your region. 

 

Illustrate a Map

Draw an outline map of California, and color the regions in which your tribes lived.  Add notes and pictures that show how the Indians in each place used the resources to meet their needs.

Each member of the group will be required to present their own contributions to the map.

 

The map will be created in class. 

You may work on your portion at home and bring to school to add to the project.

Performance Rubric – Book Project

Score 5 – Advanced

An advanced project shows exceptional understanding and effort

All required information is included and accurate, and contains additional information from outside resources

Writing is very easy to understand and includes the correct use of content vocabulary

Research is from at least three sources and includes a bibliography

Extremely clear pictures, handwriting, and notes that show outstanding effort and neatness

Contains no errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation

 

Score 4– Proficient

All required information is included and accurate

Writing is very easy to understand and includes the correct use of content vocabulary

Research is from at least two sources and includes a bibliography

Very clear pictures, handwriting, and notes that show great effort and neatness

Contains few or no errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation

 

Score 3– Basic

Most to all of the required information is included and accurate

Writing is sometimes difficult to understand and includes some use of content vocabulary

Research is from the social studies text book and some internet sources

Pictures, handwriting, and notes show some effort and neatness

Contains some errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation

 

Score 2– Below Basic

Missing some of the required information

Writing is difficult to understand and does not include the correct use of content vocabulary

Research is from one source

May not include notes, pictures and handwriting show little effort

Contains many errors in spelling, grammar, or punctuation

 

Score 1 or 0

Little or no effort is apparent

Project is incomplete or not acceptable
