Habitat and Distribution
The hippopotamus can be found in rivers, lakes, swamps, and wallows in Central and Southern Africa where grasslands are present as well as adjacent reed beds.  They are commonly found in rivers such as the Nile and the Mara, although they are much more restricted in distribution than in previous decades.

   The hippo spends the majority
of its day in the water, sleeping and swimming.  They only leave at night in search of food, commonly traveling miles to find a good source of sustance.
