VESOL A SYLLABUS

Writing & Conversation Reading And Grammar
This course will introduce you to writing and speaking English. You will use computers to write paragraphs and letters. You will learn to check for common mistakes in business writing, and fill out forms that are common to the workplace. Some of the discussions will focus on ethics, values, social problems and personal experiences and observations. All students will work both individually and in groups.
This course will introduce you to English Grammar and reading. You will apply English skills learned in grammar and reading to the workplace competencies The computer lab will be used to reinforce grammar and reading skills. Some of the competencies will be fulfilled in writing, some by role plays and others by short presentations in front of the cass. All students will work both individually and in groups.

Course Objectives and Requirements

 

 COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Demonstrate vocationally related English skills necessary to obtain employment.
  • Demonstrate vocationally related English skills necessary to maintain employment.
  • Demonstrate vocationally related English skills necessary for career advancement.
  • Demonstrate vocationally related English skills necessary to access applied technology.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Attendance and active participation in all classes. You are allowed only one (1) absence per month for a total of four (4) absences per semester. All absences must be justified by the student in writing, either by a dated and signed note indicating the reason for the absence, or by an official document, i.e. doctor's note, etc. The student is responsible for checking his/her syllabus and making up the work done in class during the time of his/her absence.
  • Completion of homework given by the instructor.
  • Satisfactory performance on quizzes, tests and classroom activities.
Grading Policies & Classroom Policies

 GRADING POLICIES:

  • All work will be graded on a Pass or Fail basis. One hundred percent of the competencies must be passed in order to pass the course.
  • Monthly tests and a final that include the competencies and their supporting skills must be passed.

CLASSROOM POLICIES:

In order to maximize learning; please speak only English during class. In addition all beepers and cellular phones must be shut off or placed in vibrator mode during class. Please come to class prepared. Your experience and knowledge are essential to our class. Please do not hesitate to share them or to ask questions if you have them.
