Q1a) Describe 2 advantages or opportunities e-commerce would bring to a business.

 a) International business would be easier to facilitate because somebody from Brazil can purchase a service or product from a business via the Internet.

b) Advertising costs would be cheaper and more efficient because with a click of one button a business can send millions of spam e-mails to future consumers.

 Q1b) Describe 2 disadvantages or difficulties a business may face when using e-commerce.

 a) Descriptions of certain products can be deceptive because a business can have their own perspective on a good product which can differ from a customers.

b) Fraud can also occur when you input any sort of credit card data, hackers can get your information if the connection to a site is not secure.

 Q1c) The second wave of e-commerce is characterized by an increase in broadband connections, distribution of digital products, and focus on an international marketplace.

Give an example of a website that successfully uses multimedia or digital products and describe how.

www.traffic.com is a website that uses a type of multimedia called flash player which brings people up to date traffic information.  Since accidents and traffic jams occur on the road all the time, it is important to bring people up to date information to help create other faster routes to get to a location.

 Q2) Include a brief definition of the following terms in your own words.

a) Computer Network- a connection between two computers via small and long distances.  Small distances can be used through the technology of blue tooth where no cords or wires are needed.  Long distances can be established through the use of the Internet where a New York citizen can talk to a Hong Kong citizen with a few key strokes.

b) LAN- a local area network that only covers a small area, usually a building, home, school campus

c) WAN- a wide area network that covers a large area, the most well known is the Internet

 d) VPN- a virtual private network which is used to transmit private information, which is usually used by companies or other types of organizations

e) What is the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web ?

The Internet is a huge network of networks which can connect millions of computers together.  It forms a network where any computer can communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the Internet.

The World Wide Web is a way of accessing information over the Internet. It something where information is being shared between anyone who is using the Internet.  The Web uses the HTTP protocol which is a special type of languages spoken over the Internet, to transmit data.  The Web also utilizes special browsers, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox, to access Web documents called Web pages.

f) Origin of the Internet

The Advanced Research Projects Agency Network developed by the United States Department of Defense was the world's first operational network which was created before the Internet.  The earliest ideas of a computer network that allowed communication between various computers were formulated by J.C.R. Licklider of Bolt, Beranek and Newman in August 1962.  These ideas contained almost everything that the Internet is today.


g) ISP- stands for Internet Service Provider which is a business that sells people a way to connect to the Internet.  In the past people only had one option which was a dial up modem which America Online provided.  Now cable modem and dsl are made available by companies such as Verizon and Time Warner.

h) HTML- stands for hyper text markup language which is a special language used to create interactive web sites

i) JavaScript- a special language that enables people to create interactive websites

j) FTP- File transfer protocol is method for exchanging files over the Internet

k) HTTP- Hyper text transfer protocol is the method of how information is formatted and transmitted over the Web

l) TCP/IP- Transmission control protocol is the method of two hosts establishing a connection and transmitting data

IP short for Internet Protocol specifies the format of packets, also called datagrams, and the addressing scheme.

m) XML- Extensive Markup Language was by the W3C to be able to customize, transmit, validate and interpret data between 2 organizations or applications

n) Server- a program that manages resources

o) Host- computer system which contains data

p) Browser- a type of application that enables a person to look at data, pictures or video located on the Internet. Some types of major internet browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera.

q) W3C- stands for World Wide Web Consortium which is a international organization where members gather together to create rules and standards for the Internet

r) Semantic Web - an extension of the world wide web where an easier method is created to share, reuse and combine information
