David's  2007  Colorado Hiking Trip
This year I was fortunate to be able to schedule in a quick trip out to Colorado to do some hiking.  I planned a hike of Mount of the Holy Cross with my brother Greg and hike of Snowmass Mountain with Brett - a friend from Kansas.
Mount of the Holy Cross:    We left Denver early Saturday morning and drove out past Vail.  Mount of the Holy Cross is somewhat remote, so we had decided on a hike in and camp overnight plan.  The hike over Half Moon Pass requires roughly a 900 ft elevation gain, drop and re-gain when hiking back out.  This elevation gain on hike out plus the total route trip distance of 11.5 miles makes this pretty tough to do in one day.

Oh sure, we could probably make it a challenge and attempt to do it in one day.  But, camping overnight makes it more fun!  Besides, it's pretty easy to suffer on this route.  We met one guy coming over the Half Moon pass around 4pm, a day tripper - and the guy was out of water and honestly, near collapse.  He's lucky he ran into us as we filled his camelbak halfway to get him home.  The locals told us about the woman who disappeared in '05 and was never found.  Wow.

Snowmass Mountain:          My plan was to meet up with Brett at the Trailhead for Snowmass Mountain - which is just outside of the Aspen area.   After all my trips in Colorado, I had not realized that there was this massive Snowmass Mountain sitting deep inside Colorado.  Wow! - it's beautiful and the Snowmass Lake - breath-taking.  My big thanks to Brett for agreeing to partner up on the hike with me.

Like Holy Cross, we had decided to do a hike in and camp overnight with a summit attempt the following day.  It was a good plan, although I had a little accident on the summit attempt that inspired me to visit the nurses at Aspen's Hospital! :)
