Day 5 - Peak 8 and Choo Choos
The previous two days were the initial hiking with that 2nd day being a somewhat grueling total 7 mile continuous hike, up to the lake (12,500ft)  and then all the way back to the car at the trailhead (9,400ft).  Thus, I scheduled in a  more relaxing, sightseeing (touristy) day so that Cole could recover a bit.  We were now hotel-based out of Frisco and could do alot from that location.
(Note:  the hotel was the Holiday Inn Frisco, which is great as it is right off I-70, 6 miles from Dillon, 9 miles from Breckenridge, 30 miles from Vail.  The hotel itself is reasonably priced (approx $85 for Aug'04 w/AAA) and it has a full restaurant, game room, exercise room and 2 hottubs, pool and sauna.  Oh, and right out the back door is the bike path around the lake and to Breckenridge.  I'm sure there is better in Frisco, but for us, it is very accommodating.)
Back to the day's activities:   I chose to do two things on this relaxing day.  First, I wanted a fun reward for Cole, so we headed up to Breckenridge at 9am to have some fun on the ski-resort's Peak 8, which for summer, turns into a summer fun area primarily for kids.  Second, I wanted something somewhat educational, so I chose to ride on the Georgetown Railroad Loop and also visit the Lebanon Mine.  (Note:  the loop and mine tours will close in October '04 for good).
Here are some pics and notes from those two activities.
Breckenridge Peak 8
We spent the morning at Peak 8, doing a number of the rides.  It's best to do the AM since summer storms can wipe out the afternoon.  Also, if you get there right at 9am, you can get in 2 or 3 rides down the Alpine slide before the line starts to get long..
Cole made it to the top of the 2nd route on the wall.
The Alpine Slide is long, fast and a BIG hit for adults and kids! The 'Got Zip' whisked Cole down a long wire!
The swinging bridge presents a bit of a challenge!
Georgetown Railroad
In the afternoon, we drove I-70 east from Breckenridge to Silver Plume, Colorado to catch the 2:20 Georgetown Loop Train.  The train pulls into the station and then heads down the mountain side towards Georgetown.  It makes a stop about halfway to let off passengers who have signed up for the tour of the Lebanon Mine.  There may be some better mine tours (Cripple Creek, Molly K's), but this was a good introduction for now.  Here are a few pics:

A black and white for that "old time pic" effect. Crossing the tallest loop bridge on way back up the mountain.
