Mt. Rainier - 2006 |
Day 1 - Glacier Basin, Interglacier and Ascent to Camp #1 |
We had our gear check at AAI on Sunday afternoon, then got a good night's sleep to wake up and get to the AAI office for the 5 a.m. load up and departure for Mount Rainier National Park. We were climbing via the White River trail head, so we headed south of Seattle, then up and around the North end of Rainier. Here are pics of getting to the trailhead, gearing up, looking at / understanding the route we'll be climbing. |

After some gearing up, we hit the trail at White River trail head. We hiked through the forest towards Glacier Basin. We took a few rest stops along the way and filled up our water bottles while it was easy to do so. |

Some glacier / snow skills review was necessary before getting on the Interglacier. The weather turned lousy on the way up the Interglacier (rain and more rain) and I got a little chilled while we set up camp. |

One "almost": while I was unpacking my bag to get the group gear (pot/stove gas) out for dinner, I mistakenly set my sleeping bag down - yep, in the snow on the glacier, unattached to anything. A round sleeping bag does roll downhill (down sloping glacier) quite nicely! Luckily, I heard others yelling, turned and sprinted about 20 yards and was able to scoop it up "on the roll". Luckily, there weren't any crevasses at that point on the Interglacier, but it is a LONG slog back up if it had kept rolling. Thereafter, I was pretty careful about anything that I was needing to set down. |
