South Island, Picton to Christchurch |
We turned in our car in Wellington and rode the interisland ferry to Picton, picked up a new car and headed for our hotel. The ferry ride was a little over three hours and pretty boring. Here's a photo of the ferry taken from Picton the next day. |

The sea was rough during our drive south. We saw a lot of seals along the way to Christchurch. We also saw a LOT of sheep, cow and deer farms. |

We saw very few of these special cows on our trip. We called them magic cows because they were so rare. Apparently their real breed name is the Belted Galloway (with the accent, it was a little difficult to tell what he said). |

At one point we took a scenic detour, almost by accident. The road was VERY windy, narrow and steep. We got to see these spectacular Cathedral Cliffs, though, which made the detour worthwhile. |

We spent a couple of days at a farm-stay (a B&B located on a farm). They were a bit standoffish, but their grandkids were visiting so Christopher got to play with other kids. He really enjoyed that. The last half hour we were there they finally let us see some animals on the "farm". Christopher got to feed some pet sheep, cows and a horse. |

The entire time we were at our farmstay it was very overcast and drizzly. We had a hard time finding things to do. We visited a Maori/colonial museum. We drove to Akaroa, a "French" town. |
