Whenever I have searched for MUDs in the past, I have always struggled to find a directory with up to date listings of online games to play. For this reason I have included a multi-faceted directory here. Immediately below are all the MUDs I have played or still play and found to be the highest quality (I'd advise anyone new to try one of these first, for they really are the best games and there are a lot of awful MUDs out there).Below that, are all the MUDs which are currently availbe for online play (active website and connectable game) organised alphabetically.

Keep in mind that I have ranked only the best online MUDs and even a low ranking means that it is worth exploring. Those in the alphabetical MUDs listing I do not presume comment on, becuase I have not played all of them. But the status of these links will be checked daily to ensure that they're still online. If you do happen to spot any MUDs that have gone to the wind, or that are hardly MUDs anymore (as sometimes happens) then kindly e-mail me by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

Another good site to visit can be found at T-OGN - MMORPGs and Online Games Rankings. They have a decent voting list and reviews section, with a good resources section for downloading software. Muds players who log their sessions should especially look out for the HTML logger, which converts text log files into coloured HTML, for easier reading. Very useful indeed!

A beautifully written world of enormous depth and complexity, yet with comprehensive help and guidance for the absolute novice. Avalon is totally original in its conception and creation and has spawned many imitators, none of which have come close to matching its depth of features or evocative descriptions. Avalon provides an expansive web site for additional help plus detailed history of the land. There is also an advanced Java client for immediate play.
Editor's comments: the creators of Avalon have an attention to detail and an eye for what makes MUDs truly enjoyable to play: an interaction between players unparalleled in its possibilities; including a balance of skills I have not found before. Avalon will be a contender for MUDs category leader for many years to come.

Age of the Throne

Age of Alchemy is an online text-based game where the Carnacian Alchemists defend their continent against the invading hordes of Sorcerers. Play direct in your browser.

First Age
Rank: 8/10

After the apocalytptic divine war, the continent of Avalon is bathed in a new dawn where you the mortal can play a major role. This is the original format of the classic Avalon role playing game before civilization evolved and removed the rough edges. Expect blood and gore once you are through the initial new player support and you had better be on your mettle. First Age is free to play [ WARNING: subject to change ] and provides a java client for immediate play from your browser. With very few 'admin' enforced rules, this land tests your abilities in combat to their fullest - a rare gem in the MUDs genre these days.

Discworld
Rank 5/10

An interactive interpretation of Pratchett's Discworld books. Lots of fun and wit in the absence of any serious role playing or the usual mud combat, something which can be quite refreshing from time to time, especially considering the choice of code base in use here. This game is well established and lovingly maintained and must be a contender for the longest running non-commercial game, even outside the MUDs genre, maintained by voluntary contributions and the generous permission of Terry Pratchett to use his intellectual copyright free of charge.

Federation
Rank: 4/10

Federation has been around for a long long time and is an extremely popular MUD that has grown old gracefully. It is a space fantasy in which you travel and trade between hundreds of planets. You may even reach the stage of creating your own planet for other players to visit. A contender for any space-related game in the MUDs genre.

The Wheel Of Time MUD
Rank: 6/10

Based on the series of books by Robert Jordan, this MUD attempts to create a world which fans of the series will recognise and be able to interact within. Expect a lot of combat and not too much help unless you have read it for yourself on the web site first or you quickly make a friends with someone more experienced (always good advice!). This is the best of the Wheel of time MUDS that are to be found out there and has been established since 1993.

Materia Magica
Rank: 3/10

Based in the land of Alyria, this a typical AD&D style game where your attributes such as strength and wisdom are picked for you at random before you start. However, it is well maintained, has a large player base and a java client for instant access and, most importantly, is all originally written. It is also free at the moment of writing.
