TO WEXFORD FOR SOCCER by Conor Cronin

On Saturday 20th July 2002 the EMC 'XI' team travelled to Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford to play in the Lisa Rowe Memorial Cup after receiving an invitation from local club Kilmore United (Martin Hayes's home soccer club).

A minibus was hired for the trip down (partly funded by our sports and social fund, thanks) and we set off at 11am from EMC car park.

The game kicked off at 4pm and we were a man (welcome to Wexford studs' first tackle!!) and a goal down after 2 minutes of play. We were struggling against a strong wind and some good soccer from the "Yellow Bellies" and found ourselves 2-0 down at half time. We got a right B-ing at half time from manager Jim-Bob and to good affect as within 15 minutes of the restart we were level at 2-2 thanks to goals from Mike Murphy and Barry Davis. We totally dominated the second half thanks to a fine personal display from Mike Murphy (who won 10 pints for Man of the Match) and ran out 3-5 winners in the end.

So with the match out of the way it was on to the local pub Quigley's and the real reason we travelled, BEER!. Vast quantities were consumed and we were well on the way with vodka and Red Bull by the time rebel band Borderline began playing! At 11PM the band handed the mic over for the presentation of the cup to captain on the day, Kevin Barry, and the roof was lifted when he raised the cup!

After that it was on to Wexford town to finish the job in a nightclub.

The plan was to head back to Cork on Sunday but a quick phonecall to the bus driver postponed this till Monday afternoon and we did it all over again on Sunday, the cup being filled all day again...

Special thanks to Martin Hayes and Kilmore Utd for a great weekend.

TO KERRY FOR SOCCER, August 2003

On Sunday 17th August 2003 an E.M.C. side captained by Mark O'Shea played St. Killian's FC of Lauragh, south County Kerry in the Sean O'Shea Memorial Cup at Lauragh. The game was 4-all after normal time (scorers for EMC were Barry Hurley and Man-of-the-Match Ballinhassig F.C. player Michael Murphy with a hat-trick). The game was then decided in a penalty shoot-out with EMC being victorious. Medals were presented that evening in the nearby 'An Sibin' pub.
