Catherine Palace

Down the street from the Alexander Palace is the Catherine Palace. The larger and more opulent of the two, the Catherine Palace, unlike the Alexander Palace, had to be almost completely restored after Word War II. Contrary to what many people mistakenly believe, the Catherine Palace was not named after Catherine the Great but after Catherine I, the wife of Peter the Great and mother of Empress Elizabeth. The palace was designed by Bartalomeo Rastrelli, an Italian architect.

The Catherine Palace had suffered damage from two major fires, in 1820 and 1863, and was subsequently restored. But the most devastating damage from fire occurred at the end of WWII when, as the Germans were retreating, the palace was burned almost to the ground. Fortunately, a lot of the artwork and décor was saved by dedicated curators, but much still perished.
