The foregoing genealogy of the first three generations of the Merrill family in Warwickshire, England is based upon the superb and extensive genealogical research of Mr. Robert Davidson of Richmond, Virginia. The author wishes to acknowledge and give credit to the work and contributions of Mr. Davidson, who has greatly expanded our knowledge of the Merrill family.

William Merrill, d. 1610


WILLIAM MERRILL was born perhaps about 1540, a farmer in the village of Honington, Warwickshire, England during the reign of Elizabeth I. His wife may have been an ELIZABETH MERRILL, who was buried in Honington on November 30, 1583. William Merrill devised his will in October, 1592, leaving household goods and livestock to his sons William, George, Richard, and Thomas Merrill, and sheep to the children of his son William. William Merrill was buried at Honington on November 30, 1610. An inventory was taken of his estate in February 1610/11, consisting of a horse and plow, farm implements, livestock, tables and furniture, brass pots, pans, candlesticks, and pewterware. Issue:

  1. WILLIAM MERRILL, buried March 12, 1629/30 at Honington, Warwickshire; md. 1586, AWDREY GIBBS, buried May 20, 1630 Honington, Warwickshire, England. William Merrill left an undated will, which was proven March 24, 1629. Awdrey (Gibbs) Merrill devised her will as "Adriana Merrill" in May, 1630, and it was probated on May 28, 1630.

  2. GEORGE MERRILL. He is mentioned in his father’s will dated October, 1592, but no further record can be found of him in the registers of Honington or surrounding parishes.

  3. RICHARD MERRILL, b. about 1575 in Honington, Warwickshire, buried 30 Oct 1652 in Honington, Warwickshire; md. October 12, 1612 at Honington, Warwickshire, ELIZABETH WEST, baptized September 8, 1594 at Honington, Warwickshire, buried October 19, 1616 at Honington, Warwickshire, daughter of JOHN WEST, Sr. of Honington; 2md. September 21, 1618 at Idlicote, Warwickshire, ELIZABETH HOBDAY, baptized May 2, 1598 in Honington, Warwickshire, buried January 29, 1631/32 Welford [possibly Welford, Northamptonshire or Whelford, Gloucestershire], daughter of ROBERT HOBDAY, Sr.

  4. THOMAS MERRILL, buried April 21, 1644 Stretton-on-Fosse, Warwickshire, England; md. October 29, 1599 at Honington, Warwickshire, ELIZABETH CURTIS, baptized December 14, 1574 Honington, Warwickshire, buried January 8, 1630/31 Honington, Warwickshire, daughter of ROBERT CURTIS the younger of Honington. Thomas Merrill of Stretton-on-Fosse, Warwickshire devised a will that was proven at the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on December 6, 1646.
