The Baptist Church at Hopewell, New Jersey is constituted, April 23, 1715

          In the first Settling of this Neighborhood it pleased God that JONATHAN STOUT and his family in the Course of Providence was Brought from Middletown to Settle in this Place himself and wife being members of the Baptist Church at Middletown and after Some Time Some more Settling and being Visited by some Ministers some were Baptised here some moveing from other Places Gave a feeble Prospect to some of the Sister Churches that in time a Church might be Gathered here which thro Divine Goodness was Effected in Manner following. At a Meeting held at the House of JOSEPH STOUT in Hopewell April 23 day Anno Dom 1715 there met together ABEL MORGAN Minister of the Church at Penepack and Philadelphia, GRIFFITH MILLER & JOSEPH TODD Members of sd. Church and JOHN BURROWS Minister of Middletown, SAMUEL OGBORN, Member of his Church to be Assistants and Witnesses at the Constitution of this those few members or Baptised persons that was then Living near here into Church Order and Fellowship the names of those then Constituted are HANNAH STOUT, ANN STOUT, JONATHAN STOUT, SARAH FITZRANDOLPH, RUTH STOUT, JOSEPH STOUT, RACHEL HYDE, ALSE CURTIS, THOMAS CURTIS, MARY DRAKE, SARAH SMITH, BENJAMIN DRAKE. These Persons being Gathered together on the Day and in the Year Above Mentioned at the house of Joseph Stout in hopewell afforsd &c. Did then and at that time Give themselves up to the Lord and to One Another in A Solemn Publick manner being United in Principle to be Governed by each Other in an Independent form of Church Government Agreeable to the word of God Convenanting to walk together, as a body to maintain the Truth of the word and Ordinances Amongst them Having a Sufficient Power to Order and Dispose of their own Affairs and Members in themselves as A body Incorporated together and Subject to none so as to Govern them or to be a rule to them Save only the Lord his word and a Dutifull Submission unto and Subjection under our Gracious King by Laws and those by him put in Authority Agreeable to the word of God. Committing themselves to the Lord and to the word of his Grace which Alone is able to make us all Perfect and present us Spotless before the throne of his Glory.
