The official published transcription of Burton Joyce Parish Register interpreted Elizabeth’s maiden surname as BEE. However, a recent analysis of the handwriting in the original marriage entry by at least one records agent has suggested that her surname may actually have been KEE. It is not presently known whether the surname Kee appears in any other Nottinghamshire records during the 1599-1620 time period; however, the surname Bee does appear in the parish of Hoveringham and the name Gee surfaces in the nearby parishes of Gedling and Colwick. Another marriage record concerning a John Stoute of Bulwell can be found in "Abstracts of Nottinghamshire Marriage Licenses from Archdeaconry Court, 1577-1700," The Index Library, Volume 58, p. 33 as follows:
November 22, 1607. John Stoute, of Bulwell, husb., and Margaret Jebbe, of Gedling, spr., at same [Bond by Patrick Stoute, of Bulwell, husb.]
It is not known whether this record pertains to the man married in Burton Joyce parish in 1609, or another individual of the same name.
While descendant Nathan Stout (1748-1826) did identify Richard Stout's father as John Stout in his 1823 manuscript family history, the association of John Stout and his wife Elizabeth Kee/Bee of Burton Joyce Parish as the parents of Richard Stout of New Jersey is a mere genealogical assumption. No original documentary evidence has yet been found to fully substantiate this claim.
