The William Whitaker bible is an ancient Geneva bible printed in 1612 by Robert Barker of London. The bible is believed to have been brought to Pennsylvania from Ireland in 1721 by William Whitaker (ca. 1701-after 1759). The bible survived the fire which destroyed the home of William Whitaker in Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1739, its darkened and stained pages perhaps attesting to that unfortunate event. The bible was brought to North Carolina in 1751, and was passed on to Whitaker's son, William Whitaker, Jr. (1732-1802) of Rowan (later Davie) County, NC, who inscribed his family's record within its pages. An article concerning the bible was published by the late Ethel Stroupe Vochko in the February, 1987 edition of the Rowan County Register [Volume 2, No. 1, February, 1987, pp. 287-289]. I wish to acknowledge and express my thanks to Robert H. Whitaker, Jr. of Powder Springs, GA for sharing these photos of the bible.
