I don’t claim it’s the best way, but this route results in a 45 minute walk after parking the car.

I approached from the south crossing the River Wye just north of Erwood to join the B4567 which also doubles as National Cycle Route 8 (Cardiff to Holyhead). After about 3 miles turn left into Aberedw (or follow the signs for Seven Stars Pub – Good Food open all day). I declined the offer, but it did look like it had been “tarted up” recently and there were several bicycles outside.

Pass the pub and bear left all the time to park up at SO 089 488 opposite turning for Cefnhinog Farm. There’s ample room for several cars here on an otherwise narrow lane.

Walk up the track to the farm. On reaching the farm gate, bear right through the undergrowth to old disused farm gate leading to a track in a gully. There’s no evidence of this path being walked, and some dead branches have fallen across, but it’s quite easy going. After 5 mins you’re through the worst of it and back out of the gully. Follow the obvious path through to the wood.

You now join a new regularly used farm track up through the wood. There were free range bullocks in here when I passed through, but they seemed friendly. Keep on track up through wood and on reaching the open field, walk across to far side and follow the field fence uphill. As you clear the last few trees, you’ll see a stile on the opposite side of the gully. Fences have been renewed here and I guess a stile has been removed. Get across to the stile as best you can.

Keep walking uphill. You’ll join a well walked path that’ll take you past some tumuli, and you should eventually see the trig point on a mound to your left.

It was very dry up there when I went, but the ground did look it might turn into a bog during prolonged wet weather.

Pictures show 2m 3 element beam set up at the trig point, and a view of part of Carneddau (GW/MW-023) in the middle distance.

I had 15 QSOs from up here, 7 on VHF using 10W, didn’t try UHF. For a low mid-Wales summit I don’t think that’s bad.
