Carneddau GW/MW-023 Locator IO82HE WAB Ref SO05 Powys |
I don’t claim it’s the best way, but this route results in a 45 minute walk after parking the car. Carneddau is the Welsh plural of cairn. There are not lots of cairns up there, but there are lots of summits, with anything from 50 to 150m drops and climbs to get from one to the other. There are no paths, so you’ll need a pre-programmed GPS or OS map to do this right. You do not want the summit with the trig point. I approached this hill off the A481 turning left immediately after a lay-by to park up at SO 073 535. If you drive to the top of this road you’ll be parking in someones’ drive/garden. So I just pulled off the road lower down the hill into the grass and walked up. Continue up past the houses, following the track to the fields at the top. Bear right into a field and follow the track/fence to the first summit. As you reach this summit you’ll see a small pine copse with a farmgate alongside across the field to your left. If visibility is good, you should see a summit on the horizon directly behind this copse – that’s the one you want. Get over to the farm gate and you are now on your own. No paths. Nothing. I tried to keep to the 350m contour line to save walking downhill, through a bog, and then climbing up again. Be aware that there are rock outcrops you can come across suddenly. I activated this hill in May and the bracken was just starting to come through. It will probably get more difficult to walk in the summer months unless the sheep make some obvious paths, but it’s only 100m climb over 1km from the pine copse. Good luck. Pictures show 2m 3 element beam and 60m dipole set up with a view up the Wye Valley to Rhyader. Also a view of three other summits on Carneddau taken from the SOTA summit. The one with the trig point is on the right and the grey smudge of the horizon is Mynydd Eppynt GW/SW-018. I had 19 QSOs from up there, 11 on VHF using 10W, didn’t try UHF. For a low mid-Wales summit I don’t think that’s bad. Mike de G(W)0WZY |
