MYNYDD NODOL NW-048 We drove down the A4212 between Trawsfynydd to Bala and found quite a large car park just up from the canoeing club right next to the dam.Going in the direction from trawsfynydd to Bala the car park would be on your right with the dam running alongside the car park. ( there is a car park on the other side of the dam but the gate going over was locked,) although it was a nice extension to our walk. From the car park we went through the walkway at the side of the gate and over the dam, once over the dam we turned to our right and climbed over a gate and continued on up the road. Further up the road we took a black gate on the right and climbed steeply up the mountain, there was no paths we just followed the sheep paths or no path at all. We had to scramble over rocks, streams and fight through the long heather, as well as climb a couple of fences. It also didn't help as the path was very wet and boggy and so it was also very slippy in parts. The mountain wasn't a good host to walkers and climbers. When we finally reached the top it was worth the climb as the views were fantastic, we could see Arenig Fach and Arenig Fawr which were our neighbouring mountains with a wonderful view of the dam and further afield. The trigpoint was a small cairn with a fencepost standing up from the centre which could possibly be used to tie a pole to, for the antenna. We used a rubber duck that day and managed to get contacts as far as Billinge and Birkenhead and that was only using half a watt. Parked up at the end of a track on the South West side and duly followed up and around to a gate where a path of sorts broadly follows the fence line up before disappearing. 50 yds of heather hopping later brought us to the large summit cairn and another fence suitable for supporting HF antennas. Time to summit about 20 mins. VHF/UHF activation only on this one with Roger on 2m FM and myself on 70cms FM. With no wind and lots of lovely large snow flakes gently falling around us we were quite comfortable here. For a small summit surrounded by much larger hills this summit is surprisingly good, with a lovely vantage point. Thoroughly recommended and should be more popular than it is. Thanks to all those that worked us. Rick GW0VMW & Roger MW0IDX |
