Full-Surface Crochet involves first working a ground piece and then working stitches on top of ground with the yarn held in front. The following steps will walk you through the creation of a dishcloth embellished with full-surface crochet. Then there are a few samples to give you ideas for how to use this technique. |

1. Chart your project. Note the placement of empty spaces (always 2 together) to allow for the surface work. |

2. Stitch the ground. I used worsted weight cotton and a G hook for this piece. Ch 36, dc in 6th ch from hook. Complete according to chart. Spaces=ch 1. Blocks=3 dc. |

3. With slip stitch on hook, insert hook from front to back around dc or ch-1 sp. |

4. Complete single crochet stitch. |

5. Continue around, placing 2 sc around each ch-1 sp and 3 sc around each dc. |
|
6. Slip stitch to join in beginning sc, fasten off. Weave in ends. Work a border of sc, worked evenly around-5 sc in each corner. Some designs may not start and finish in the same space. If this is the case, simply fasten off and weave in ends. |

For extra texture, try working around 2 stitches at a time. Ground alternates rows of treble and single crochet. |

Full surface crochet worked around the vertical thread of Tunisian Simple (Afghan Stitch). Take care not to pull the threads too tightly. Weave ends into the surface stitches and the wrong side will bear no trace of the surface work. |
