BRAZIL : Rio
Carnival street festivities
See
Brazil Carnival photos !!!
The festivities begin on the Friday before
carnival when the mayor symbolically hands over
to the King of Carnival (Rei Momo) the key to the
city. You can find a lot of joy and fun, not only
with the rehearsals of the Samba Schools from the
Special Group, but also with the rehearsals of
street bands and groups that already prepare
themselves for the very expected and traditional
"street carnival" in Rio.
The heart of street carnaval, beats on Av. Rio
Branco, in the Rio de Janeiro downtown, that
presents from Saturday to Tuesday the greatest
variety of blocos de Embalo e Empolgacao, and it
is where the merry-making is at its wildest with
traditional groups such as Cordao da Bola Preta,
Cacique de Ramos, Bafor da Ongha, to mention just
a few. A visit in the end of the afternoon is
always entertaining.
In the street carnival revellers dressed with
costumes made at home, shirts printed with names
of the band or group they are parading for, or
simply dressed with beach clothes. People from
Rio, brazilian or foreign tourists, whoever...
they are all in the streets, avenues and squares
to sing and to dance on the samba rhythm!
