Searching the Web

 

 

Introduction

The World Wide Web is a powerful tool for communicating ideas, facts and opinions. Without leaving your desk, you can access and retrieve information on almost any topic. The trick to using the Web effectively is to use the tools which will help locate available resources.

There are many such tools:

*      Web directories:   

*      Search engines

*      Specialized search engines

*      Meta-search engines:

You may use as many search engines as you please. We strongly recommend Google. (About Google)

 

Who wants to be a Millionnaire?

 

*    Search for answers to the following questions.

*    Send your answers to the forum as a TGUVA to my message Trivia and state the search engine and the search strings you used.

*    Send the links to the sites that provide the answers.

*    Do the answers appear in more than one site?

1.      Who was the 12th President of the USA?

2.    How many films did James Dean star in?

3.    How frequently does the 13th of the month fall on a Friday?

4.    What is the capital city of Iceland?

5.    How many sonnets did Shakespeare write?

 

 

 

 

Organizing Search Results

 

*    Choose a topic of interest

*    Search for sites.

*    In your word processor create a table (HOW?) with 3 columns: Site name, Site address, and information.

*    Fill in the table with at least eight of the best sites you found on the topic. You can copy and paste both site name and address (HOW?).

*    Save the file (HOW?).

*    Attach your file to your message to the forum  as a TGUVA to my message Favorites

*    Open your peers’ files and visit their sites.

*    React to at least 3 messages. Recommend sites on their topics
