Guinea Pig Sounds
There are many different sounds that guinea pigs create.  Some in which occur for many different situations.  Below, I will list all the sounds and the reasons why they make these sounds.

The Sounds
Purr
If you do not have Plug-In support, then you may either download it, or exit.
The reason why guinea pigs make a purring noise, is for many different reasons.  One reason is that, whenever you stroke them, they feel comfortable, and secure so they let out a purr.

Another reason is because they're scared.  Whenever they hear a noise, they would purr because it was rather loud - which means that it scared them.

(This reason is dedicated to those who have more than one guinea pig in sight near it) One last reason, is that: whenever  you have more than one guinea pig in the room, and that one happens to be a girl - and you have a boy there too, the boy would purr because it's letting out something unusual.  This purr usually occurs when a female is around, so watch out because it could get pregnant.  (Check out this story to find out more about purring:
Ginny and the Purr.

The Excited Squeak
The Excited squeak is the squeak that guinea pigs usually make when they're being tormented.  I recorded a squeak from Ginny (If you have plug-in, you can hear it on the left) when I was petting his side, and just tormenting him.  Guinea Pigs don't usually like this kind of petting, so I would recommend you to not try this at home!

The Squawk
The Squawk Squeak is a squeak that Guinea Pigs make when they're either hungry, or desperate for something.  For example:

Read the story of:
The Squawk for Breakfast
which talks about Ginny's Squawking business everyday.

Guinea Pigs might squawk because they want a guinea pig there by their side.  Some may squawk by, if you pet another guinea pig from a pet store, and come home for your guinea pig to sniff your hand, it'll squawk like crazy.

It is most common for a Guinea Pig to squawk for food.  So if you hear a "squawking" noise, then don't get worried.  It's always for a good reason (At least I think it is)

The Squeal
The Squealing noise is the most worried noise you could ever hear.  When a guinea pig "squeals" that means that they're hurt or feel hurt.  For example, if you pet a guinea pig and touch a part of it that hurts them the most, then they will let out a squeal to let you know that it hurts them, so that you could move your hand away from them.  Squealing noises mostly occur when one bites another one, and when you pet them too hard.  Once you hear a squeal, you should run to your guinea pig, and find out what's happening.

Note: If you keep two females in the same cage, and you hear squealing, you should leave them because it means that the newcomer is getting her lesson taught by not doing what she's doing.  But if you hear the newcomer, or any female squeal for a long period of time, you should check what's wrong then, because something serious might have happened.

The Contented Squeak
I myself LOVE this squeak.  Whenever you pet your guinea pig until it sleeps, it will let out a squeak that will occur every second, but it is a very low squeak.  This squeak is very low and if you ever hear it, just continue petting.  The guinea pig feels safe, and cozy on your lap.

The "Annoyed" Squeak
Ok, This squeak is just horrific.  Please don't try this...if you clap or flap a paper above a guinea pig's head, it'll make a weird noise that sounds like a "deformed squawk".  This squeak is very rare.  Whenever your guinea pig may make this squeak, it just means that they're annoyed/scared of a noise that's close to them.  So please do not do this to them, they'll get very annoyed!!!

The Squeak
Wow!  The squeak.  That's it?  Just..."The Squeak"?  Well, Guinea Pigs do squeak just like that.  The reason why Guinea Pig's might just squeak, is because they're lonely and need someone around.  Other times, they're just simply squeaking when you're petting them.  But the main reason why guinea pigs squeak, is because they're talking to someone.  We may just know "English" but guinea pigs squeak in their own language, that they "think" we understand, but we don't.  That is how guinea pigs communicate with eachother.  They let out a "squeak".

The Breathing Noise
Don't try this either.  Whenever I hold up my guinea pig (Just by the top of it's body, no where else), it's mouth will open, and it'll make a weird breathing noise.  This means that they're having trouble breathing.  They will let out hard breaths, and YES it does stink, but somehow, this breathing noise helps them communicate with nearby guinea pigs.  For example, one time I held up Blackie like this.  Ginny was standing right there, and he just happened to see her up there.  Blackie let out the "Breathing Noise" and Ginny saw her.  She looked straight at him, and kept breathing hard.  Ginny then pushed his head up, and opened his mouth.  Him too made the breathing noise, even though he wasn't held up by the top of his body.  This just means that he feels awkward seeing another guinea pig near him uncomfortable, so he acts the same way.  It's normal, but please DO NOT do this to your guinea pig!!!
