James worked as an Ag/Lab in Eastwood Renfrew Scot where he met & married Elizabeth Picken in 1852. He then moved over to Glasgow in 1854 where he worked in a timber mill. In 1861/2 he moved back to Dunbar where his 6th child David was born at the home of his father at Shore Dunbar. I have been told by family members that the family came down to Sunderland Durham England by Boat in 1865. By 1868 the family had settled in Ryhope Durham where the family became Coal Miners.A lot of the family are buried at Ryhope in the Public Cemetery & James & Anne are buried in St Pauls churchyard in Ryhope. The family migrated down to Sunderland on his grandfathers fishing boat in 1863, they moved to Ryhope in Co Durham. David like the rest of his brothers worked in the coalmines at Ryhope & the surrounding mine pits.He had quite a temper and would come home from the local pub battered and bruised. 23S. David COMB David joined the Navy after being in the Sea Rangers,& rose to the rank of Petty Officer. He was following in the COMB tradition of making a living from the sea. During WW2 he was torpedoed twice & the 2nd time he spent 24 hours in the freezing water of the British Channel. He was then assigned to a shore position until the close of war. After this he took up the position of Warder at the Borstal Institute for deliquent boys in Chatham Kent England. He died in Chatham & is buried there. 89. Thomas COMB Sapper WX 15362 PEDI: birthThomas Comb served his appenticeship for Butchery Smallgoods & Slaughterman at the Ryhope Co-Op at Ryhope Co Durham. This was a seven year term, when he finished at the age of 21yrs he left & found work as a ships butcher. He sailed the world eight times before jumping ship in Queensland Australia . He stayed with a Family Mr & Mrs Oliver with a daughter Edie & son Willie, they were also from Ryhope.In 1931 this family moved down to Mussebrook in N.S.W Aust to manage a coalmine. In 1931 Tom was working at Mrs Logue Mount Hill Walkaway W.Aus as a horsebreaker. In 1832 he went to Wiluna to work in the goldmines. Here he met lydia May Comb who was working at the boarding house, they became engaged & in july 1934 they married in West Perth. After the honeymoon Tom returned to Wiluna while May stayed with her sister Mary Melboune in Belmont Perth W.Aus.When there house became free May returned to Wiluna in September. Their son David Charles was born at Wiluna September 1936,from Wiluna they moved up to Marble Bar & lived there until june 1941 when Tom left to join the A.I.F as a Sapper . May came down to stay with her sister Mary again & Tom left for Singapore in January 1942 ,nine months later on the September his daughter Barbara was born in Guildford.It was 3 years before he found out he had a daughter. He became a P.O.W with the Japanese & worked on the Burma Railway. You would have thought he had had enough of railways , but when he returned from the war he worked for the W.A.G Railways until his early retirement due to Lung Cancer. 91. Sidney COMB Sidney was a great runner & he raced under the name of John ANDERSON {as told by his daughter Megan} 98S. John William HERBERT Worked in pits around Silksworth Durham. When married lived in Higgens Tce - one bedroom. Moved to 15 James Tce- These were new houses with water laid on, baths & flush toilets, but a large rent to pay.Just befor the war they got a colliery house in Lords St, no bath & outside toilet & wash house. Silksworth pit closed & they got John William a job in the Iron Foundry in Burton on Trent. He came down & lodged until he got rooms for the family.John William was deafened in the 1st war. Nearly all the relatives suffered from Coaldust in the body from the mines (Eyestagnus) 99.
