Why not help your feathered friends have a snack while you enjoy watching them from a distance. All you need is an empty milk carton or plastic milk jug, heavy string or wire, glue, scissors (remember only use scissors when mommy or daddy are around or let them do the cutting for you), bird seed and whatever you want to decorate it with. You could use waterproof craft paint, twigs, leaves, moss. Let your imagination run wild. Wash out the milk container really well and let dry. Once dry cut out square holes on all four sides big enough for a medium size bird. Have mommy and daddy make sure that the edges aren't sharp, especially if you are using a plastic milk jug. If the edges do feel sharp, file them smooth or put waterproof tape over the edges. Punch a hole in the top and thread heavy string or wire through it. Now comes the fun part, you get to decorate it. Once you have finished decorating it and everything has dried, you can fill it with seed and hang it from a tree or attach it to the top of a fence post. Then stand back and watch the beautiful birds. Rember to keep filling it so the birds will keep coming back. Here are some other fun ideas for our feathered and furry friends. Put popcorn and cranberry strings in the trees. Cover large pine cones in peanut butter and roll in bird seed. Attach a string and hang in a tree. Buy suet at the grocery store and mix in some seed. Then shape into whatever you want an let get firm, then hang. Bunch together some carrots (with the green stems on) and hang low for squirrels, deer or bunnies if you have them in your area. Grow Giant Sunflowers in your garden in the summer and then dry the heads. Attach a string, hang and watch the birds eat the seeds. |
