Topolsky pressed the barrel of the gun into the side of Liz's head. Liz's eyes were wide with fear and she let out a small gasp.
"Now, put my belongings away before someone gets hurt," the agent said menacingly.
Max dropped the files in the cabinet and raised his hands. "Okay," he said calmly, "They're back. You can let her go now."
Topolsky shook her head, "Oh no Max, not yet. Not until we all have our little chat. Tell me what I want to hear, and she goes free."
"What exactly is it you want to hear?" Michael asked. "I don't see what we could tell you."
Topolsky gave a queer little laugh. "The games stop now! Tell me that you're aliens. Tell me that you are from out of this world. Tell me the truth, or I will start knocking off your friends until you finally tell me."
"Those are conflicting requests," Max said in a quivering voice as he watched Topolsky's hand shake against Liz's head. "Do you want us to say we're aliens, or do you want us to tell you the truth?"
"Do not toy with me!" Topolsky shrieked. "I will not stand for it. You friend will die I assure you."
"Just let her go," Maria said in a calm voice. "Let's just talk about this reasonably."
Topolsky snorted, "And give up my bargaining chip? Uh huh."
"Just stop this Topolsky," Michael said in the most reasonable voice he could muster. "Killing some student is not going to get you in the clear with your superior officers."
"We are not aliens," Max said. "I don't know what led you to believe this. Just let her go and we can get you help. Medication, doctors, something."
"Stop it!" she demanded in a shrill voice. "I will not let you get away from me. You are my case. My catch. You're mine dammit, and I'm bringing you in whether you like it or not. What else I do in order to accomplish that doesn't matter."
"Please," Max said in a pleading voice as he watched her finger shift on the trigger. "Just let Liz go. She isn't who you want. I'll do anything just let her go."
"I get a confession or the girlfriend dies," she said menacingly. She grabbed Liz's hair and yanked her head up.
Liz gritted her teeth. "Don't tell her anything Max. Do not tell her a goddamn thing. She doesn't have the guts."
"Really?" Topolsky said with a cruel smile. "You don't think I have the guts?"
She pushed the gun into Liz's head as hard as she could. Max watched the scene unfolding in horror. His powers couldn't reheal a wound like that. There was no way.
"Any last words?" Topolsky whispered menacingly in Liz's ear.
Tears glistened in Liz's eyes, but she said in a quivering, but brave voice, "Don't say what she wants to hear. Nobody, understand?" As the barrel ground into Liz's head she looked straight at Max and whispered softly. "I love you. You know that."
"Goodbye," Topolsky said in an almost sing-song voice.
"Stop!" Max yelled in a loud voice. "Don't shoot her."
Topolsky paused, momentarily. "And why shouldn't I? I haven't heard those words I want to hear yet."
"Don't do it Max," Liz said fiercely.
When Max faltered, Topolsky prepared to pull the trigger again. She shrugged. "Your choice Max."
"Fine, we're aliens. We're not of this earth," Max said in a desperate voice. "Just let her go. Please."
"Good choice Max," Topolsky said in an approving voice. She threw Liz into his arms by her hair. Max gathered her to him and held her close.
"You shouldn't have told her," she said in a broken voice. "You shouldn't have."
"I had to," he whispered. "I couldn't let her kill you."
"But, she'll take you away from me," Liz said with a small sob, "And then I might as well be dead."
Max wiped away her tears gently and held her to him. "Don't worry Liz. It'll be okay."
"Depends on your definition of okay," Topolsky said as she walked over to the desk where Alex was sitting. "I'll just send a message to the agency, and a containment vehicle will be here for you all within the hour. I suggest you get your little goodbye's out of the way now."
Alex got out of her way quickly as she glared at him. The gun however was the swaying factor.
Michael was by the desk in 2 quick strides. He slammed her laptop shut and slid it away from her. "You're not telling anyone," he said in a deadly voice.
"What exactly are you saying Michael?" Topolsky said, unruffled.
"I'm saying, as far as you are concerned you received proof that we are normal human beings. There is no further need for FBI investigation in Roswell." Michael replied grimly.
Topolsky shrugged, "Why exactly would I do that?" she said.
Michael gave her an icy smile back. "When your friends get here, they won't find a goddamn thing. We'll be gone, but so will you. To clarify, you'll be gone permanently."
"Is that as threat?" Topolsky asked, leaning back in her chair.
"Why yes," Michael said, "I do believe it is."
The agent made Tsk!ing noises. "My my, you should know better than to try and threaten an employee of the FBI. It's against the law you know."
"I'm not exactly concerned with the law at the moment," Michael said calmly, "And apparently, you aren't a stickler for the law either."
Topolsky shook her head. "I'm just doing my job."
Michael took a few steps back from the desk and turned to look out the window at the stars. "And I'll just be doing mine when I get rid of you." he muttered.
"Well, I'm sorry to hear that," Topolsky said. Maria watched in horror as she picked up her gun and aimed it at Michael's back. "Two aliens will do fine though."
"No!" Maria yelled. Michael didn't even know what was happening. She had to save him.
Time seemed to slow down. Maria's watched Topolsky's face as she aimed the gun at Michael who wasn't even aware exactly of what was happening. Maria leapt towards Michael, intending to get him out of the way.
She heard Liz's voice screaming, but it seemed as it was coming from far away. Her body knocked into Michael's and the impact knocked them over.
This happened at the exact same time the gun went off.
