Black quits refugee board, calls it racist, insensitive

CP

TORONTO - (CP) - A prominent member of the city's black community quit his $86,000-a-year job Wednesday on the Immigration and Refugee Board, calling it racist and insensitive.

Dr. Sam Ifejika, 50, also urged an independent inquiry into the practises of board members and staff.

"We have a 90-per-cent rejection rate. The refugees are not getting fair treatment. These people are insensitive to the needs of immigrants and refugees. The racism within the board is well documented."

Board spokesman Pierre Bourget called Ifejika's allegations unfounded, noting the board is monitored by the federal government and by members of the legal community.

Ifejika had been an executive with Toronto's Black Business and Professional Association and an official with the race relations division of the Ontario government.
