CUSU Referendum on NAC Affiliation

Mon Oct 16th

I'm a student visiting Britain and was really appalled to discover that a student's union here is expected to affiliate to a pro-abortion group.  Surely abortion is something on which people have such differing views that it's crazy to expect an entire university to support a particular pro-abortion campaigning group?
I also have very stong personal views about the whole question of aborting people because they have a disease which could be detected while they are still in the womb.  Pro-abortion campaigners say that it's crucial to 'catch', and then abort, babies with serious diseases ('defects' as they are sometimes known).  Often they will claim that some children's lives will not be worth living, that they are imposing a hopeless burden on their families etc.  One of the diseases often mentioned is cystic fibrosis.  This is a disease which causes the body to produce a thick mucus in the lungs and pancreas which means they don't function properly, which results in lower lung capacity and for many people frequent lung infections and malnutrition.  I feel really strongly that people with cystic fibrosis have a right to life.  I have cystic fibrosis.  Although I have the symptoms mentioned above, my life is worth living.  This is a view I assume my family also holds!
I really would appreciate it if students in Britain were allowed to uphold the rights of people like me.

Whatever individual members of CUSU believe about the right to abortion, it is wholly illogical to invoke "but not every member of CUSU will agree with NAC" as an argument against affiliation.  One of the points of a union is that its members vote and that is how a policy is formed...if we always worried "yes but some people might not agree" we would be unable ever to make a policy about anything.
Vote in the referendum...but remember that those who argue for affiliation are not trying to get CUSU to take a moral stance, and are arguing for CHOICE, not for ABORTION.
