Last Friday morning Mr. John Davis, a well known young an here and
in Nacogdoches, died at the home of his Mother-in-law here, after a short
illness from fever.
Mr. Davis had only been sick a few days, but it seems was
dangerously almost from the start, and his death was announced before many
persons even knoew of his illness.
He leaves a bride of a few months, having married Miss Augusta
Crossland only a short time ago.

William J. Davis and Sarah Ann Mayfield
Ben
Baker was my g-grandfather. As told me,
he was a handsome man with wavy hair, about 5’10 and 160 lbs. He was very even tempered man, and he talked
slowly enough to become a family legend.
Ben was a farmer and blacksmith like his brother Bud. He is said to have invented some type of
Side Harrow Plow (I don’t know exactly what that is) that became widely used,
although he didn’t file for a patent. I
remember playing with his blacksmith tools as a small child, and I recall
telling my grandmother that olf tim blacksmiths must have been stronf to be able
to use those tools! Mattie Davis’ name
came up several times in my family forkelore, mostly when the older generations
were trying to recall what Indian remedy she would have prescribed for some
ailment. Sometime I was told she was
“Black Dutch”, and other times that she was a “full-blooded Cherokee”. If that were true, it would suggest that
both William and Sarah were predominantley Indian. I badgered the older generation without mercy for more
information about Mattie, but it has mostly passed out of living memory. However, my family forklore confirms some
Indian-ness in this line. David Hindman

William J. Davis and Sarah Ann Mayfield
I have some information on William J. David and Sarah
Ann Mayfiled. Willia and Sarah are my
gg-grandparents. William Henry Davis is
my g-grandfather. The earliest that I
find William and Sarah in the census is 1860 in Nacogdoches County, near
Douglas. They are there thru 1880 and
in the 1910 census I find Sarah living with James M. and Martha J. Baker. The children of William J. Davis born 1818
S.C. and Sarah A. Mayfield born 1829 Miss., were: Eliza Frances b. 1850, m. 1st
Hezekiah K. Johnson and 2nd Charles R. Judkins.; Martha Jane
b. 1853, m. Jesse M. Baker; William Henry b. 1857, m. Pauline Rebecca Paschall;
Caroline Virginia b. 1858, m. John Henry Biggs; Margaret A. b. 1859; George W.
b. 1865, m. Virginia Judkins; James D. b. 1865, m. Mary Catherine Rogers; Sarah
B. b. 1867, m. A. N. Rogers; Nannie W. b. 1874. All children were born in Nacogdoches except Eliza Frances b. in
Mississippi. Frm “The People of
Nacogdoches County in the Civil War” the pension records show that William J.
Davis was in Co. A. 1st Bn 3rd Brigade, Texas State
Troops. Under comments it says he
claimed to be three quartes Indian. I
am interested in finding the burial place of William J. and Sarah. Could they be in Friendship Cemetery? Other Surnames of Interest: Davis, Mayfield,
