“ZACHARIAH P. AND REBECCA DANZEY FENLEY”
“By Barbara Fenley Pinner”
“Zechariah P. Fenley (Fenley),
born ca. 1795 in North Carolina, believed to be the son of John Buckner Fenley
and grandson of John Fenley and Linney Buckner of Green County, Georgia,
followed some of his family to the Nacogdoches area about 1835 from Clarke
County, Alabama with his wife, Rebecca Danzey, born 14 December 1802 in South
Carolina and children, Harriet Elvira, born 24 January 1820; William Norris,
born 22 October 1822’ Charles Richard, born 12 October 1829; and John Morris,
born 5 June 1833, all born in Alabama.
Four other children died in infancy.
Zachariah’s sister, Harriet,
widow of Robert Caller, had married John S. Roberts, later a signer of the
Texas Declaration of independence.
Zachariah was granted 1280 acres of land, which he settled south of the
Angelina River near the present Pollock, Texas.
During the Cordova Rebellion in
1838, one of his slaves was taken, and Zachariah went to rescue him. As a result, Zachariah was killed 10 August
1838, and buried on Bodan Creek, near Pollock, Texas.
At the time of Zachariah’s death,
Rebecca was expecting a child, Zachariah Roberts Fenley, who was born in the
Stone Fort on 9 October 1838.
Zachariah’s wife, Rebecca, sued Cordova and gained interest in the Stone
Fort in Nacogdoches.
Zachariah and Rebecca’s children
married as follows: Harriet Elvira to George Allen, 14 June 1837 in Nacogdoches;
William Norris to Adeline Hicks in Cherokee County on 19 February 1850 (my
great great grandfather); Charles Richard to Lou Sanders 4 April 1872 in
Angelina Co.; John Morris to Jane E.
Waters 8 February 1860; and Zachariah Robert to Annie Waters 19 July
1866. The four boys settled in present
Angelina County near Pollock and Harriet lived in Houston, Texas, for a time
and returned to East Texas and married Samuel M. Flournoy 9 January 1859 in
Nacogdoches County. Most of the
families are buried in the Gann Cemetery in Central in Angelina County.
Harriet and George Allen (a
brother to the Allen brothers which founded Houston, Texas), had three sons,
John Kirby II, Samuel W. and George E., Jr.; William Norris and Adeline (Hicks)
Fenley had eleven children: William Tolliver (my grandfather) married Caroline
Williams 14 February 1874; Perry Oliver married Mary Jane Dixon 27 October
1874; Charlie Norris married Louisiana Belle Burns 14 August 1873; John Rusk
married Octavie Million about 1883; Emma Eugenia married John F. Dixon;
Zachariah Phillip II married Rebecca Chancey 8 September 1887; Rebecca A.,
married Dumas Smith; Robert E. “Bob” Lee married Fannie H. O’Quinn 26 February
1891; Clara married William A. O’Quinn 29 February 1888; Sam married (1) Winnie Sanders and (2) Mary
Etna Hood; and Mina Elmira was unmarried.
All this family is buried in the Gann Cemetery.
There are many other descendants
of Zachariah and Rebecca Fenley throughout East Texas and other parts of Texas,
especially in Angelina County.
