Mom's on the Phone
Today on the phone I see your face
through a voice of kindred spirit.
Between us there’s so much space,
but I know I sure did hear it—
The voice of my Mom, which I always knew,
now something different in the line.
Someone who has walked in my shoes,
made them comfy, no step out of time.
What a mother feels, what a mother does,
it’s all to the benefit of another.
It won’t matter what the net worth was
when it comes to the love of a mother.
You told me how life had been before,
I saw someone I could relate to.
The youngest one of six you bore,
didn’t know what you had gone through.
I know that you cried for me when I was sad.
You glowed when in happiness I danced.
I know that you loved me in spite of my bad
and cheered me when I chanced.
But as two women, I now can see
the part of you that made me whole.
Without the experience that had to be,
I’d miss my calling and lose my role.
The strength I have has come from you,
It’s easy to plug it in.
An answer’s coming when I think I’m through--
God answers, and we win.
The heavy things I thought would break me
got so much lighter today.
My kids, my joy, my family--
worth whatever I’d have to pay.
The kids are getting crazy now,
they know we’re on the phone
I’ll make it out there somehow,
Oh, ignore the call-wait tone.
Mom, I have to tell you, my admiration’s true.
I’ll never again take this all for granted.
Always did the best possible to do,
made music with what you were handed.
It’s not enough to say thanks & love
when a light has gone on so bright.
Just know that your God is my God above,
and I know we’ll all be all right.

Author's Comment:
My mother and I have grown closer in our
physical distance than we have face to face.
This poem is a nutshell to "deep" phone
conversations we have on a regular basis.
I love you to pieces, Momma-Friend.
