11.) Richard N. Branson. b. June 23, 1841. m. May 15, 1856 to Jane Wells. d. July 13, 1917. bur. Adams Cemetery, Wolfe County, KY. Jane b. 1848 in Lee County. d. Feb. 22, 1919.
    During the Civil War Richard served with the Union. An act of Feb. 7, 1863 authorized raising a volunteer force of 20, 000 men for better defense of Kentucky. The force included eight regiments of infantry, one of cavairy and two batteries of artillery.
    Richard volunteered Aug. 25, 1863 when he was 22 and served as a private in Co. F, 47th Infantry Regiment. Its duty included operations against Gen. Morgan in May and June, 1864, scout and patrol duty in eastern Kentucky; at Camp Nelson, KY and on the line of the Kentucky Central Railroad until April, 1865. (9)
    He was discharged on Dec. 26, 1864 with a disease of the lungs, a cough, pain in his side and weak eyes, all contracted while at Camp Nelson. (10)
    He was five feet, nine inches tall with dark complexion, blue eyes, light colored hair and listed his occpation as a farmer. He and his wife lived in Harlan County for about 15 years after the war and then moved to Bath County, where they lived two years before moving to Whisman. Their only child was Louisa Branson, born April April 12, 1876.  (11) \
    Richard was 76 when he died. Cause of death was listed as old age with cholera and a paralytic condition.
    In 1918 when she was 70, Jane was granted a widow's pension. Information in her application included her birth place, her parents and brothers and sisters Ira, Jery, Rebecca, Abba, Frank, Sarah, Zach, Malisa and Rachel.
