Posted Friday, April 4, 2003, 4:31 PM by Maiko The Royal Air Force, Channel 4 and Just Flight team up for a unique three-hour TV program that recreates the famous 'Dams' raids. On 16 May 1943, 19 Lancaster bombers of 617 Squadron, led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, took off from RAF Scampton heading towards the Ruhr Valley for what was to become one of the most famous air raids of the Second World War. There have been numerous books, documentaries and a rather famous film about the legendary 'Dam Busters', and to commemorate the 60th anniversary of 617's most famous raid, Channel 4 and the Discovery Channel have produced a unique three-hour documentary about the men and the machines that made this mission such a memorable part of WWII and aviation history. Unfortunately, there were no military or commercial simulators that could replicate the seven crew positions of a Lancaster, let alone bouncing bombs. Luckily, British software company Just Flight was on hand with their officially licensed Dam Busters simulation that runs on a normal PC using Microsoft's Flight Simulator 2002 and Combat Flight Simulator 2. Just Flight's software formed the heart of a wooden Lancaster fuselage assembly built in Meridian TV's studios in Southampton with technical assistance from Southampton University, providing a low-cost replica that multi-million pound conventional flight simulators could not match! The TV documentary is scheduled to be shown on British television at 9pm on Channel 4 on April 7th and April 14th. Schedules in other counties by the Discovery Channel are to be confirmed. And I am humming the tune already! Gah!
