- Aguardiente
(Fire-water).- Also known as "Puro"(Pure) or
"Caña" (Cane). This may be the traditional Ecuadorian liquor.
It's basically Sugar cane juice fermented and distilled. It's very high in
Alcoholic content (aprox 40-50% factory made and 50-70% non-factory), and
has a strong molasses aftertaste.
- Cristal
- Zhumir
- Caña Manabita
- Frontera
- Norteño
- Licor del Valle (Sangolquí)
- Traguito y Gallito
- Licor del Mono o Guagua Montado
- Non-Factory produced
- Anisados (anisette).-
This are Alcoholic Drinks with aniseed flavor. They usually have a medium
alcoholic content (Aprox 30-35%), and have a nice and moderately sweet
flavor. They are very treacherous drinks, you may drink and drink without
feeling anything, and when you less expect it, you pass out. The hangover is
horrible. I like them a lot, specially with Fresco Solo (like cool-aid).
- Secos (Dry).- This
drinks where introduced as an alternative to anisados.
You see, not everybody likes to drink sweet drinks, so Secos where
introduced, at first from the same companies that produced anisados. They
are basically pure alcohol (you may call it Ecuadorian version of Vodka)
with very little taste of their own, so they combine very well with almost
any drink. They are a cheap alternative to imported drinks and you don't get
a hangover as bad as the one you may get with anisados, they are very
popular, specially with students and where you are out of money.
- Tropico Seco
- Patito Seco
- Seco Montero
- Brandy.- Not really
brandies, since they are not made from grape, they are a group of alcoholic
drinks with citrus flavor. They also have a medium alcohol content (30-35%),
have a very good citrus taste and can be drank alone or combined. In fact,
they combine very well with almost any fruit juice and they give a nice
taste of their own to the drink. This is the type of booze used in Ecuador's
national cocktail the Happy-Japa.
- Brandy Naranja- Lima
- Brandy Lima-Dry
- Beers.- This is a
Egyptian drink made from barley... yeah, yeah you know it, I like it so much
I made a page just for it.
- Pilsener
- Chop
- Club Cafe
- Club Lata
- Club Verde
- Nevada
- Rum.- Distilled Sugar
cane juice, but aged at least 4 years in oak casks. This was the logical
step to go from Aguardiente production. Some
Ecuadorian Rums have very high quality, others are very bad but very cheap,
there's room for all tastes. Rum is one of Ecuador's favorite drinks,
because you can get good quality at a moderate price. You have plenty to
choose from:
- Ron San Miguel (Plata, Oro, 5 años, 7 años)
- Ron Castillo
- Ron 299
- Ron Camey
- Ron Bellows
- Ron Trovador
- Wines.- Ecuador
doesn't have a tradition of wine making, as a matter of fact I used to
believe that there wasn't any wines here in Ecuador, but while researching
for this page I found that there are some wines made in the Sierra. I
haven't tasted them so I can't give information on them. What we do have are
some drinks called "Fruit wines" that are made from several
tropical fruits. We also have a sparkling wine called Champagne Grand Duval.
- Liquors and Cremes.-
There are several liquors and cremes made in Ecuador, we even have a fine
liquor called "Espiritu del Ecuador" that is very good.
- Others.-
There are other liquors made here that don't fit into the above categories.
Some are made by companies and some are home made:
- Rompope
- Chicha de Jora
- Chicha de Yuca
- Guarapo
