CHEF de BATAILLON
The Wargame Section are currently trying to get to grips with this very detailed set of rules which run to over 200 A4 pages. In the same way that we see Kriegsspiel as truely the 'In Period' set of  rules we are developing to fight wargames as part of living history re-enactment, Chef de Bataillon give us the ability to demonstrate the fine detail of the problems of command, movement and combat with a battalion of infantry, squadron of cavalry or battery of artillery.

The scale is 1" = 10 yards and one figure = 5 men. A company/troops  is the smallest tactical unit. Ideally the game is played on a 6ft by 12ft plus table so that the attacking force starts a half a mile from the defender, must make the approach march under fire and then deploy to the appropriate formation to launch the final attack whether by firing or close combat.

While the rules at first looked particularly daunting, the more we read them, they actually appear to be a very simple set of rules. We are currently play testing the rules in the Reading Wargames Club which meets every Wednesday in Winnersh. We will be taking the game to our club show - Warfare, in November. Whether you have any experiance of CdeB or are just interested in trying the rules, you will be most welcome to join us.

Happy gaming, John
