Our Johnson - Luttrell Branch
Sir Geoffrey LUTTRELL:(1)
b. Bet. 1158 - 1180 d. Aft. 1216 in England; m. Frethesant PAGANEl/PAYNEL (d/o William PAGANEL/PAYNEL). b.aft. 1160 in Hooten Pagnell, Yorks, England. d.1240. The origin of the LUTTRELL's may have been in France, for the name derives from the French word 'loutre' meaning an otter. A certain Osbert Lotrel is recorded as owning property at Argques in Normandy in 1180. His contemporary, Sir Geoffrey LUTTRELL can be regarded as the founder of the family in England. King John sent him on diplomatic missions to Europe and gave him many useful sinecures. His Marriage to the heiress, Frethesanta PAYNELL/PAGANEL was of more enduring importance for the family fortune was founded upon her inheritance.
Sir Andrew LUTTRELL:(2)
b. 1208 in Of East Quantoxhead, England. d. 1264 1674 in England m. Pernal Or Paganel de La Mare Bet. 1266 - 1252. b. Abt. 1210. d.1267, (d/o of Philip de La Mare). In 1229 he aquired the estate of his grandfather, William PAGANEL/PAYNEL, and claimed PAGANEL/PAYNEL property in Lincolnshire & Somersetshire on the death of his 3rd cousin, Maurice of Gaunt. This second windfall included the manor of East Quantoxhead which became the headquarters of the LUTTRELL's in the south of England.

Sir John LUTTRELL:(5)
b. Bet. 1303 - 1313 in Chilton, Devonshire, England. m. Joan DeMOHUN. b. Bet. 1307 - 1313 in England. d. 1378, Daughter of Lord MOHUN.
Sir Andrew Luttrell:(6)
of Chilton Co. Devon, b. Abt. 1335. d. Bet. 1372 - 1426. m. Lady Elizabeth DeCOURTNAY. b. 1333 in England. d. August 07, 1395 in Exeter, Devonshire, England (d/o Hugh, Earl of Devon and his wife, Margaret, d/o Humphrey DeBOHUN, Earl of Herford; d. before 1404). The aquisition of Dunster Castle was made by Lady Elizabeth, who purchased the reversion of Dunster from the MOHUN's. She was a shrewd business woman; Edward III had granted her an annuity of 200L which was renewed by Richard II, and she purchased more property with her savings. The aquisition of Dunster was her greatest feat, though she could not claim the property until after the death of Lady DeMOHUN, so her son Hugh, enforced the bargain.
Sir Hugh LUTTRELL:(7)
b. ca 1364, England,  d. March 24, 1428, m. Catherine BEAUMONT, b. 1354 in Saunton, Devon, England, d. August 28, 1435, (d/o of Sir John BEAUMONT, Knight of Sherwell, d. 1435 and Elizabeth STOWEL). He served in France with Richard II & Henry IV holding several appointments: (listed in succession) Lieut. of Calais, Mayor of Bordeaux, Governor of Harfleur, and Great Seneschal of Normandy. He was M.P. for Somersetshire in the reign of Richard II & subsequently for Devonshire. On the death of his cousin, John, he inherited East Quantoxhead, and when Lady DeMOHUN died in 1404, he hastened to pursue his claim to Dunster. He began by dispatching the tenants and moving into the Castle in time to celebrate Christmas 1405. This stung the MOHUN's into action and there followed a scramble for the deed of title of the Castle, entrusted to the Prior of Christ Church, Canterbury. Sir Hugh LUTTRELL took the Prior to court and eventually obtained the documents which proved his right to the Castle. The MOHUN's co-heirs, the Duke of York, the Countess of Salisbury, and Lord Strange of Knockin still contested the validity of the transaction. Sir Hugh was not easily panicked; he won Parliament on his side and so arranged arbitration by two peers and all the justices. When this failed, Parliament insisted the claim should be heard in the ordinary courts before an impartial jury. By this time, the MOHUN's case was wearing thin and they resorted to arguing legal technicalities. It is nevertheless disappointing to find that the story lacks a climax; the case was adjoured after the first hearing and was never recommenced. Henceforth Sir Hugh's right to Dunster was unchallenged. He worked hard to make his new home habitable; one of his first acts was to install windows in the Great Hall and his private quarters. In 1420, work began on the Gatehouse, a symbol of the prosperity of the new owner of the Castle.
