Five allied Families of Knox County
The following thumb-nail chart is intended to be helpful in enabling readers of these notes to understand more clearly the relationship that existed in the ancestrial background of five families who settled in the KNOXVILLE COUNTY as soon as the treaties with the Indian tribes would permit. These five families were:
1. ARMSTRONG FAMILY
2. MORROW FAMILY
3. LUTTRELL FAMILY
4. CHURCHWELL FAMILY
5. WITT FAMILY
NONE of these families came from PENNSYLVANIA, but all were descendants of emigrant ancestors who first settled in the Colony of VIRGINIA, prior to, or by the middle of the SEVENTEENTH CENTURY. Based on early land records of VIRGINIA from NUGENT.

It will be noticed that the only MORROW shown on this chart is DOROTHY MORROW who appears as the ancestress of the ARMSTRONG family and the wife of the first ROBERT ARMSTRONG. An extension of the chart to include just one more generation, the SIXTH, would bring them back into the picture.

The bracketed numbers indicate the number of each generation. The WITT family only goes back to the third group, since they are said to have come from VIRGINIA with the influx of the HUGONOTS, who settled in MANNIKIN TOWN at about that time. This is mostly tradition and the compiler has not confirmed it. The authorities on which this chart is based include
various sources, but particularly the "CAVALIERS & PIONEERS" by Nugent.
