Before we explain
how nasi lemak can contribute towards your health, let
us explain
first what nasi lemak is. In Malay, "nasi"
means rice. There is no equivalent word in English for "lemak".
The closest meaning of "lemak" is fat or grease but if we
are to call it fat or greasy rice, it would not give the true
meaning because there is another type of traditional Malay rice dish
known as "nasi minyak" which means oily or greasy or fatty
rice. "Nasi minyak" is normally served during a special
Malay occasion, like the Malay wedding or "kenduri."
Nasi lemak is prepared by
cooking a mixture of rice and proportionate amount of coconut milk
known as "santan" in Malay. The flesh of a ripe coconut is
taken by grinding and later squeezed to extract the juice out.
This juice is known as "santan." In the olden days, the
coconut oil is extracted by boiling the "santan" but
nowadays, due to the easy availability of other vegetable cooking
oils in the market, the practice of making coconut oil from the
coconut milk has ceased. However, to the few who still believe in
the health benefits of consuming coconut oil, the production
of coconut oil still continues at some rural areas on a small scale
for their own consumption.
Most people believe that
consuming nasi lemak is not good for their health because the coconut oil
contained in the rice would increase the cholesterol
level in their body. Contrary to their beliefs, however, we would like
to clarify that coconut oil does not increase
the cholesterol level in the body. As soon as they are absorbed into
our bodies, coconut oil is straightaway burned into energy. In fact, coconut oil has other
inherent properties that are beneficial to our health as follows: -
|
|
1. As explained
above, coconut oil does
not increase the cholesterol level of the body. Other cooking oils
are stored in the body as fats whereas coconut oil is immediately
converted into energy and therefore not stored as fats. People who
consume coconut oil regularly have slim bodies and look younger.
2. Until today, coconut oil
has been traditionally used as a massage oil. It is also used as a skin lotion for
healthier and younger skin. It prevents destructive free-radical formation and provides protection against them. It can help to keep the skin from developing liver spots, and other blemishes caused by aging and over exposure to sunlight. It helps to prevent sagging and wrinkling by keeping connective tissues strong and supple. In some cases it might even restore damaged or diseased skin.
When it is applied to the skin, the oil is absorbed into the skin and into the cell structure of the connective tissues,
thereby limiting the damage excessive sun exposure can cause.
For people with dandruff or red spots on their scalp,
just douse the scalp with coconut oil and leave it for about 20 minutes. Then shampoo. You will need to shampoo at least twice. This works better than tea tree oil shampoo from the health food store or anything else you have probably tried.
3. About 50% of the coconut oil
contains lauric acid, which is the major fat contained in a human mother's breast milk and the major reason nursing infants have a high resistance to getting sick. Lauric acid in the
coconut oil will
also have the same effect of increasing your immunity to diseases, regardless of age. For more information,

4.Coconut oil is good for the
diabetics. Whereas other fats had to utilize the insulin to convert
into energy coconut oil is not dependent on the insulin to convert
into energy . Therefore, diabetics can get good energy into their cells without insulin
requirements. For more information, please

Other than the nasi
lemak rice itself, a set of our standard nasi lemak (nasi lemak
biasa) also includes slice cucumbers, anchovies, nuts, boiled egg
and sambal paste.
1. Cucumber is a type of
vegetable and without going into detail, we all know the benefits of
having vegetables in our diet. Due to the cooling properties of the
cucumber, it serves to neutralise the hotness of the sambal paste
2. Anchovies ("ikan bilis")
contain protein, phosphorus and calcium, which are necessary for the
development of bones in our body.
3. Nuts contain protein, which
are essential for the development of the body.
4. Boiled egg contains protein
in the egg-white and fat in the egg-yoke, both of which are
essentials for the body.
5. The sambal paste is made of
dried chillies, salt, sugar and spices, each of which has specific
minerals and vitamins for the benefit of the body.
